Propagating fruit from seed

Two years ago I sourced as many northern (z5) fruit tree and shrub seed that i could find to plant around my new to me farm property.

In early spring this year, i transplanted what survived under snow cover of my year old seedling bed to a nursery bed, planting about 2ft apart to give them space to grow up. So far I have the following in the nursery bed:

Prunus tomentosa
Prunus princepia
Prunus virginiana var shubert
Manchurian Plum
Prunus munsoniana
Prunus serotina
Prunus nigra
Prunus americana


Viburnum trilobum
Assorted wild grapes
Morus rubra

actinidia arguta

Asian pear (Kenko & Kikusui)
Bosc Pear
Manor Chum

As far as growth goes, the American plum is most vigorous, followed closely by Nanking cherry. Once this nursery bed gets more established, i plan to transplant in order to reduce overcrowding.

I had read you plant pears for heirs, so its unlikely I'll be seeing fruit from them anytime soon (unless i learn to graft... which is tempting to try...). However I am anxious to see some flowers and get a taste of what I started within the next 3-6 yrs. I realize anything goes with fruit from seed, but you never know!

Teresa: You might not have that long to wait for the pears. I planted nursery plants the year I moved here, and get a decent harvest from most of them already, 8 years later. I have heard that if you plant your pear seedlings at a 45 degree angle, you trick the tree into thinking it is a branch on an established tree, and it starts bearing fruit much sooner. I can't remember where I read that info, but I thought it was a reliable source at the time. It is true that it takes about 15 years for a pear to hit full stride for production, but believe me, you can't eat as many as that would be.
The asian pears will be even quicker to start producing than the the others. Don't be in a hurry to get a "decent" crop from any of them. First year they set even one fruit, steel yourself and take it off right away. Let no more than a handful stay on the tree for the first 2 or 3 years they set fruit. It pays off in the long run. Do some experimental grafting on what ever you have at hand that is suitable size, and you don't mind altering, even just taking from one branch and grafting to another on the same tree. It really isn't that complex. (This from a guy that is paranoid about every graft he makes).

I have two modern apple varieties that I'm slowly grafting to. its mainly getting good live stoch. I woulding if you can graft a pear onto a Apple, There is a old barlet pear I would like to save it by grafting some scionwood onto my apple I also know of some no main apple terss I would like to graft There is some flowering crab trees near by but no decent variets that I would like to get some of the larger varieties I have a Santa Rose PLumb I want to improve along with two pech tree. Something I will be looking into . The biggest problem will be finding a source for them.

George: Yes, you can graft pear onto apple or quince, and vice versa. There are apparently a few varieties that resist the process, but it is fairly commonly done. Quince is often used as rootstock for both pears and apples.

And along the same lines, I've heard that if you bend the stems so that they are as close to horizontal as possible, tied down some how, you'll get fruit much earlier and for the same reason. This is supposed to work for both apples and pears grown from seed. It somehow switches the tree's growth mode.

Incidentally, you can get roses to set masses of blooms by bringing leaders close to horizontal for the fall and winter, then resurrect them in late spring. That's one I know works, as I had it happen here (initially by accident), and now let all the leaders I can grow out, and pull them down in the fall. You end up with a column of roses. I'll try and remember to take pic of one of the roses tomorrow.
