Savoy Cabbage - San Michele after overwintering, producing flower and seed. Now the new growth is starting to curl into mini cabbages. My leaf broccoli that I planted last year is eeking along, not spectacular but certainly alive. It has not flowered but I wasn't really expecting it to be an easy flower as it was bred to make leaves.

Great colour. Be interesting to see what comes of the mini cabbages.

Brussel Sprouts: What's the difference between snot and Brussel Sprouts? Well, kids will eat their snot. Someone help me here. Okay so the vile voles have taken out a combined measurement of 2 rows of broc, cauli, and cabbage. Alas, the only thing I have left to plug in the holes are Brussel Sprouts which I call Brussel Splats, which is the noise they make when a child spews them. These are Long Island B/S. Will anyone eat these if I grow them? Is this a trap crop for the gophers? If I put these in CSA boxes will I be reviled and get hate mail from 8 year olds? Attachments:

What we are looking at is what we call fondly, "Ottawa Cabbage" We don't call it Telsing cabbage because invariably someone misspells it and I can't have my cabbage tesling.... Telsing send us these seeds last year and the Chinese Cabbage was magnificent. I got at least 2 pickings off it before it went to seed. It was early and had few bugs. Here's the seeds on a tarp. Today I was teaching Emily how to do the seed dance. Attachments:

Emily is my farm intern. She comes once a week to learn and help. Note that we put the tarp in the shade in the driveway, where sharp rocks don't make holes in the tarp and we don't die of the heat...yes it was 90 when we were doing this. Attachments:

Note the small berm we put in the tarp. As Emily tosses the seeds, the oh so lite breeze tosses the chaff just past the berm. Emily was very excited to do this. After this we did fan winnowing. The seeds are not quite clean yet, as Emily is only here for a few short hours. We'll finish up next week as she's trying to get the whole process down. (We also washed and bagged 100 pounds of potatoes) we had to work in the barn as it was TOO hot. Dar would need a jacket. It was only 102. I took all the potato culls that were washed and sliced them, boiled them and dehydrated them. I'm going to use them in a soup mix. On to corn.... Attachments:

Lieven's Broc was the last to bolt. Thanks Lieven. I'm letting it go to seed. I did eat one floret! And fine Broc it was too. Attachments:

If you ever have extras of the Lieven's broc, I'd be interested!
Glad to hear that the chinese cabbage is doing so well for you. I find it here and there sometimes in the lawn as I must have spilled seeds. It seems very hardy too.
