We had a light frost this morning that killed the squash. A heavy killing frost is expected on Thursday night. The tender crops that are not covered by then are expected to croak.

Sorry to hear that. Is it normal for you to have a killing frost now?

Whoa. Seems a bit early for weather on that level in your latitude? Hope you can get some of it rescued in some way or another.

We typically have a frost that kills tomatoes and squash after the first rainstorm in September. This year's frost surprised us because there was no rainstorm. (We normally have a harvest day the afternoon and night after the rain stops.) Thunderstorms are predicted for Thursday so when it clears up after the storm there will likely be a hard killing frost. This is typical weather for us... On the early side of average so I was disappointed that I didn't get more tomatoes. (But I had ripe cantaloupes and watermelons this year!!!!)
What drives the frost here more than latitude is that my gardens are located at 5000 feet elevation and are in a valley between 10,000 foot mountains. We get radiant cooling like crazy when the sky is clear and the cool air sinks into the valley.
After this next frost I expect it to warm up and be nice pleasant weather until October.
I'll be picking like crazy the next few days. There was lots of damage to the foliage on tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, peppers, corn, etc. The fruits are OK except for some tomatoes. I'll cover a few tomato plants just in case.
Regards, Joseph

Then I wish you good speed with your harvest activities over the next few days. It sounds sort of like me, bad stuff happens, but there is really more good stuff than bad stuff and next year will be better!

That's fascinating really though I wish the frost had hit you a little later. Weather and geography: two of the (many) favourite subjects of gardeners.
