Joseph I was thinking yesterday that you should breed a yellow fingerling and call it "Goldfinger".
I am stumped on varieties especially for brassicas this season. I need to buy less varieties in greater bulk to save money and it scares me a little. Some things sound so good in the catalog and then perform so poorly.
Here is what I think now (2011 catalogs haven't come yet though)
beans- saved rattlesnake and provider
beets- gold and chioggia from Baker's
Broccoli- not sure yet- want heat tolerance and good side shoot production
bok choy- have one that bolted too quickly, trying mei qing choi next season
cabbage- still deciding -like the ones in Pinetree especially Point One but don't want to order from them this season
Napa cabbage- Johnny's Rubicon
Carrots- a mix package and purple Dragon from Irish Eyes
Cauliflower- green, purple and Romanesco from Baker's, may spring for some Cheddar seeds
Cucumber-Beit Alpha in Bakers sounds good but too few seeds for what I need, want just one OP variety
Eggplant- have some seeds from trade but they are too late maturing- looking for a neat small Italian variety ok in MN
Edamame- envy again I think
kohlrabi- have Vienna but don't want to grow many kohlrabi
leeks- plants from Johnny's
lettuce- mixed baby leaves, also one butter and one oakleaf
melons- Delicious 51 and Crimson Sweet
Onions plants- from Irish Eyes - more sweets for customers
scallions- Guardsman from Johnnys is good
peas- Super Sugar Snap from Johnnys and Wando from Irish Eyes, maybe another shell pea
Parsnip- saved thousands of Harris Model
Peppers- plenty of sweet bells, also Banana and Marconi (not Gourmet Orange- that one is not good!)
hot peppers-bhut jolokia again, Thai, Laotian, lemon yellow and a lot of real big hot peps for market like poblano, anaheim, jumbo jalapeno and numex
Potatoes- only Rose Finn Apple, Reddale and Carola- trying to get some scab resistance!
pumpkin- have Cinderella and some small pepo seed
radish- trying to choose a really early and mild normal red variety for customers, plus watermelon (no more Black Spanish)
Rutie- Laurentian
Spinach- Tyee and Emu from Johnny's
Summer Spinach- maybe something from Bakers
Summer Squash- looking for PM resistance. Anton, Zephyr, crookneck and pattypan (no round this year)
winter squash- saved TN sweet potato, also will grow any c. pepo I can get seeds for like acorn, dumpling, delicata
moschata- either Long Island Cheese or Fairytale (musque de provence) all the pepos should give people something to buy
sweets- beauregard again
swiss chard- may grow rainbow mix
turnips- red stem and yellow
tomatoes- for sure a OP sungold, persimmon, flamme, stupice, green zebra for market, brandywine, Underground Railroad, JD Texas, Sicilian Saucer, Coustralee...
sunchokes- yellow and red
garlic- planted about 300 hard and 300 softneck- Chesnok Red, Purple Glazer, Music, Chinese Pink, Transylvania, Nootka Rose, Simonetti and some unnamed.
Shallots- regular and some red, round from Asian market
Any advice on broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, potatoes or winter squash would be appreciated. I'm really worried about the broccoli since I always grow a mixed packet with good results but want to start getting a larger amount cheaper.
