Hi, I found this board a couple of weeks ago, and thought I would join....seems like a place with some like-minded folk.
I garden in zone 2 Saskatchewan, having only grown heritage/heirloom and open pollinated varieties of vegetables. We have gardened here for the last 3 summers, I gardened in zone 3 Alberta for a couple of years before this.
I have to resort to season extension and love to push the envelope...if the neighbours say I can't grow corn, never mind...I will grow corn!
I have a budding interest in veggie breeding/seed saving. I have been saving seeds for 4 years, but nothing too serious.
Hope to make a good contribution to the board.
Marie

Welcome to HG, Marie. You'll fit right in. Feel free to share and have fun. Do you grow in a greenhouse besides outside? john

Thanks for the welcome stratcat!
I realized after the first summer here that a GH would be very useful. Fortunately, the universe felt I was ready, and I have greenhouse space. This year we used it for tomatoes, peppers, a couple eggplants, celery, herbs & melons.
Next year I will work with row tunnels and plastic mulch outside. I am also learning that there are wide variances in the microclimates in the gardens.
We have 1 big and 1 small garden area and one tiny nursery area (I have been using to desperately plant bulbs in the fall when they go on sale before it gets too cold), and started working up an area for wheat this summer...I see in my future asking the hubby to work up more areas further away for isolation. He hasn't heard about this yet! lol.

Welcome, I laughed when you said you had designs your husband didn't know about yet... : ) If you can grow melons in Saskatchewan, it gives me hope in BC

Thanks for the welcomes!
Synergy, are you in northern BC? Do you have a greenhouse? We are just south of the 54th where we are, north central SK. I picked the shortest melons I could find and grew them in the greenhouse. We Almost made it! By mere days... Next year it won't rain all summer, and I won't get sick for a month and I will transplant them sooner. Ahhh, yes, next year's country...
So do I Telsing, so do I. Thanks!
Marie

honeydew,
Welcome from another northern gardener - from the UK.
Also finding greenhouse gardening more reliable for tomatoes, peppers etc. Melons - I try and I fail and I try ........
One day we will figure it out and I look forward to hearing about your successes.
Hope you like it here.
