Anybody here every dug their own simple root cellar structure?
I've been in desperate need of a root cellar since I started the business a few years back, I finally decided to be a glutton for punishment and begin work on one (by hand) while still working on rebuilding the family tobacco barn.
For those who don't have a high risk of severe weather it would probably be adequate to dig a cache and place a rubber barrel or trash can in the hole in order to store food, perhaps even creating several caches and hidding them in plain sight if things should ever get "that bad".
For us in the ohio valley however, tornadoes are a fairly common occurence and as such having a place to stash not just feed and seed but family is paramount.
I decided to dig a rectangular hole in the ground, five-six feet in depth 16 feet long and 6 feet wide. Around the perimeter and inside the hole I will dig another one to two feet and place a perimeter drain which will remove water from around the inside walls of the cellar. The hole will be lined with two layers of green house plastic to protect from moisture and flooding and will be framed out using heavy duty concrete shipping pallets, nailed together accross the top and bottom with 2 x 4 studs and reinforced at the corners with cedar posts atop of this will set two old and beat up full size pickup truck toppers braced down the middle with cedar posts and 2 x 4 studs, the plastic will then be wrapped overtop of the truck toppers and the whole deal minus the steps down into the cellar on the northside of the hill will be filled in with the northside built out using creek rock.
