Well I was able to barter a hog for some clover round bales the other day. The guy was trying to figure a way to pay me for the hay, and after a few weeks, I saw him at the local farm supply store and after helping him load his supplies, he commented that he was still trying to figure out a way to pay for the hay. Well , I said what do you have to trade. After a momentary pause he said , How about a hog, I told him it sounded good to me, so in a few weeks we'll have a hog in the freezer. to go along with the quarter of beef and 20 chickens. Does anyone have any good barter stories...

Not that good. A pig is a great exchange. Normally I work on the karma system. I do nice stuff and hopefully it comes back in kind. When I lived in Naniamo, BC, the barter system was alive and well. Lots of 'you fix my computer' and 'I'll give you some salmon.'

Telsing, We're believers in Karma also , Just the other night we were at a drawing. The first pot was around $600.00 , when the name was pulled, there were a few sighs and aahhws. A lady sitting at our table commented that he can use it as much as anyone else. When they drew for the second pot that was for $800 her husbands name was drawn. I commented to my wife first, and then to her that it was her good Karma that pulled her husbands name. And, yes it was a good trade, the cash money would have been a little more than the hog is worth, but he's a good guy and the monetary amount isn't going to put us in a bind.

I have bartered horse semen for both hay and carpentry and made fabulous friends in the process . Both times I put my end of the deal forward first in good faith and was not dissappointed. Later I started a seed saving and plant swap with these same horse breeders. Barter stays alive and well in British Columbia

thats a pretty good bartering item, can't say that I could come up with that if someone needed or wanted some . I don't even have a clue on how I would collect it. Would probably end up emotionaly or physically scared from the process.

I have bartered horse semen for both hay and carpentry ... Now THAT's some awesome horse trading!! ;D ;D ;D I'm a bit of a computer nerd and I've bartered computer work for dinner ... but only to the really good cooks! I've also bartered computer work to a local water well company for pipe and services.

I'm scheduled to do some grafting fruit-trees for my farm neighbor who supplies me with horsepoo; I'm so getting the better of this deal!

We give a lot of stuff away, food, labor, etc. At first, there was no return. But we were strangers in the midst of people who have lived here for generations. So, our first return on the investment came in the form of people simply talking to us. Now we are building a reputation of being honorable, responsible, and respectful neighbors who can be counted on. We are the recipients of increasingly frequent "gifts" of mulch, tractor time, cash, and more. Some folks are even giving us friendship. It's amazing and makes my spirit rejoice. ;D

Yes; cast your bread upon the waters. Sometimes the ducks eat it, sometimes it comes back a sandwich.
