I bought a sack of beans at a Hispanic market in a nearby town. I soaked and boiled half of them yesterday for dinner. Nothing fancy, water, salt, and some olive oil. I was expecting to be able to mash them. However, they remained quite firm even after a couple hours of simmering. My husband loves them! Big surprise to me as he detests beans. Anyhow, I'm soaking 6 of them to see if they will sprout. If they do, I'll try to grow some and see how they do.

I think I know the beans that you are talking about, I planted a few last year fairly late and they are a bush type and they gave me seeds in the fall, I was going to grow them again this year as well, they are one of my favorite beans

So far, no sprouts. I'm keeping them in water a bit longer though. They do seem a bit on the tough side.

or they could have been irradiated, or dried with to much heat but you will know in a while, I can send you some of the ones that I grew last year if yours don't grow, but might be easier to just try them from another company if yours don't work

I am getting the winter blahs just a bit today and reviewed how to sprout grass/greens and they suggest soaking for 12h, then rinsing every 8-12 h until you see sprouting. They might be too wet?
Good luck!

Yep, they could be old, but because they were imported from Nicaragua, I'm thinking they were probably irradiated. I'll give Kelli's method a shot. I have them in a small saucer so they might be to wet.
Thanks for the offer Space! I'll let you know a little later in the season. I'll keep ya'll posted on what's "growing" on here first.
