For that early crop of 'pea taste', I have experimented before growing peas to harvest the leafy tips for a quick stir fry. I've tried cheap round smooth pea seed as hardy and quick growing. However, they don't seem to have much vigour and it's difficult to do this as a 'cut and come again' crop which is what I'd like to do. Can anyone recommend a pea variety which is VERY vigorous and grows so strongly that the growing point and top leaves can be harvested several times? I've grown both Petit Provencal and Roi des Conserves as excellent peas but they don't seem very vigorous either.

The snow peas/tendril peas/sugar peas are commonly recommended for pea shoots. You know, I'm growing Lincoln right now as pea shoots. They are very vigorous (according to me) growing in a southern window and have already been cut once looking like they need it again. However, I selectively cut rather than shear which might make a difference.

I saw your posting about your indoor garden with pea shoots after I'd posted my bit above. They look really great. We already grow lots of sprouting seeds in winter in the warm of the kitchen but I hadn't considered before doing some pea shoots in a box. I guess they would grow well in a mixture of vermiculite and compost, which wouldn't weigh much. I will try my climbing mangetout peas and see if these work well in this way.
