I agree, I adore Black Krim. Haven't had one since leaving California though. Aunt Ruby's German Green is also outstanding. Round it up with Hartman's Yellow Gooseberry and I'll tell you what, I would be a happy camper if I never grew anything else!

Why do you start so many seeds together? i am unfamiliar with that. I thought thats the way everyone with large gardens started them, It saves alot of space and since tomato seedlings are almost indestructable, this way makes total sense. even when handled roughly you can almost rip the roots off and they will grow fine.

Jack, Just wondered if you tried germinating seed in vermiculite yet? As you have so many seedlings so tight together, separating the roots and transplanting the seedlings is SO much easier in vermiculite without damaging tiny roots as you are more likely to do with compost. I find it works very well with me, and have been doing it for years with most vegetable seeds.

This year I've used 50/50 vermiculite and potting soil. I transplanted 7 tomatoes today that were in a single 2" pot. It was very easy to separate the roots. I was very pleased with the results. Hope the tomatoes are as well!
