Over the weekend the last of the 40" of snow melted which we have received over the last 3 weeks. So I just couldn't help myself, I went out to the garden and started planting. And yes, it was sprinkling most of the day. Here are some photos: First mud, which is the best mud, because I am hyped about planting today. I won't be hyped about mud in April. The winter (Austrian) peas that were planted in November survived the winter and are doing great. The Egyptian onions that were planted last fall have spouted and aught to be producing edible green onions in a week or two. Chives were also sprouted. I collected lots of clumps to put into pots. And finally, an overview of my garden. The darker colored soil is what I planted today. 20 rows planted between what I planted today and since fall. The rows are 40 feet long. Today I started a spinach landrace: Aiming for all smooth leaved varieties because they are more bug resistant in my garden. Planted: Razzle Dazzle, Correnta, Teton, Giant 157 Hybrid, Space Hybrid, Satin, Baby's Leaf Hybrid. Today I also planted radish, peas, carrot, turnip, lettuce, wheat, kohlrabi, kale, cabbage. I'll plant them again in a few weeks when the soil is dry enough to use a seeder. I figure that tomorrow I'll move the strawberries that I planted too close to some tree roots last spring.

what plate do you use with the seeder for wheat (if any) ? I moved over-winter and can't find my seed plates. Thanks for asking, it's given me fair warning to find the plates. I use the cucumber plate for planting wheat: About 2-3 seeds every 9".

I'm a bit behind you garden wise, although last weekend I did get the raised beds ready for another layer of compost. I also broke up and burnt about 30 to 50 large sunflower stalk till they were basically charcoal, then I watered them down and shoveled it all on top of the half of my raised beds, I may get a couple of bags of Hardwood charcoal to do the rest with, then add a layer of compost on them that way I do very little tilling except for braking up hard pieces of large clods. I was able to get a hold of my cousin's son and He said I could use as much land as I wanted for a garden, there is 4 acres of unused land where he is at, and at one point when My Aunt was alive she let me use a 1/4 acre, but It was a lot of work and there is only one source for water and I ended up getting 300 feet of hose just to get it all watered. I grew a lot of great veggies, but It was like I was the little red Hen as I couldn't get any help until it was all picked and then every one wanted a share. So this time will be different, I just need a 50 to 100 foot strip to garden on already my nephew wants to do a raised bed on it, but that will mean extra work and more money that I have to build a good raised bed. A 50 or a 100 foot long bed at 1 1/2 foot tall and 2 1/2 to 3 foot wide would cost quite a bit and we would have to have top soil brought in and that would be extra also. At any rate I will talk to my cousin to see what he has to say about it. George W

I'm pleased to read that I'm not the only one who remembers the little red hen, an excellent children's parable, properly leftist.

Seed plates? As in for an Earthway? LOL If the answer is yes, I can certainly help you out with that wee little "vinhicular" problem. I had our plates here in the house while the seeders themselves died in the fire. I'll get 'em out to ya ASAPers.
