Before snow gets too deep, could you probe to locate tunnels near your plants, and gross out the voles with fish oil or castor oil, or my favorite, pee?

You're in no way gonna put off voles with legumes.

Not a bad idea, but the moles continue to excavate under the snow wherever the ground isn't frozen, and thus both the moles and voles are active all winter. They find mulched areas where the ground isn't frozen and camp out. That's why I'm very paranoid about mulching plants for winter protection. The good news is, we don't have snow cover yet, or frozen ground, so the vole patrol is enjoying fine hunting conditions. I'm hoping the rodent population will be considerably reduced (photo from a warmer part of the year) Part of the vole patrol at his post.

S/he's a cute and keen eyed looking hunter. Ditto on the white stuff. We've had one weird (but enjoyable) season here.

That cat should hunt well in the snow, but he does stick out against the green.

By the way, the plural of pee isn't peas, it's pissim.

Oh no, white cats look like shadows just like black cats. I can only find this one when he wants to be found. For the record, this is the elegance at the farm. He's the "tame" cat. Or rather, as tame as the cats get. The black one occasionally has civil moments. There's also a grey cat that is very clever and friendly. Every other of the cats you see are feral. Hunters, fighters, and foe of the vole. I love the post cat. Attachments:
