The cross between these two long season cabbages: San Michele being a blush savoy and Red Rock Mammoth being an excellent (in my opinion) Red Cabbage produced seeds from both pod parents.
SM X RRM = RRM pod parent: small seeds, possibly only RRM genes. Seeds are starting to sprout sporatically now.
SM X RRM = SM pod parent: is a cross (there was only one SM so it pretty much has to be) and the seeds are quite a bit larger than my other cabbage seeds including the original SM seeds. They also appear to be quite vigorous germinators. Though I'm not sure if the large size will lower their longterm viability any??

Very interesting cross - San Michele is one of my favorite cabbages. Looking forward to hearing about what you get ....

Not actually surprising I guess but the big seeds from the San Michele pod parent have produced big seedling leaves and vigorous growth. Some starting shooting out their true leaves within a few days.

Do the seedlings have a red tinge?

I got predominately red, but did get a few green plants! Really excited to plant this out this week!

I'm really excited that you guys are going to join me to see what will result. Nice to hear that you had a few green plants. So far mine seem to be all red tinged, some darker than others but they probably aren't as big as yours. Not planting out size yet.

A red savoy would be quite something. Looking forward to the story as it unfolds.

So far, it appears that all my seedlings are different hues of red but we haven't had really moderate weather yet to lighten up the leaves. Growth is vigorous, especially for the S.M. pod parent.

The brassica mixes on the link sound great Lieven. I mixed glossy collards (Green Glaze) with an unknown red cabbage. In that mix there are various coloured collards and cabbages, some with glossy foliage, some without. I am planning to select non-heading plants. Next year I want to add Cavolo Nero kale and Red Dutch cabbage to the mix. The Red Dutch is a very dark purple in the cold weather. Brassicas are not only fun but excellent in the kitchen.

They do sound great! Lieven, would you be willing to trade off some seeds from that grex?
