I too feel animals work well in a permaculture type setting on the farm and I will be getting a couple of ducks to eat slugs. We got a young new australorp hen and the brown buff orppington hens are terrified of this small little black hen that peeps.

I really need to get a chicken flock going on the farm for very practical reasons. Black Jersey Giants, I think.
What I miss most, though, is cats. I'm catless for the first time in ~40 years; it sucks. It will be years before I can re-cat.
Couple weeks ago, one of my farm neighbors would have let me have a three-legged puppy (stepped on by a horse, not mending, had to be taken off); a very cute and pleasent little guy, but I can't keep a dog now, either. Foo.

We are thinking about getting a goose or two for holiday dinners. Meanwhile, we have 17 chicks and 30 eggs set to hatch beginning April 17th.
