Okay, this is just too funny not to share...
Our daughter, at 12, is starting to ask to watch scary movies. Some of her friends are allowed to watch stuff like "The Hills Have Eyes" and the "Saw" series, but there's more gore than I think she needs in those. But I understand the desire to a) be like your peers and b) have a good scare, so I've started to let her get some things at the movie store.
Anyway, I rented the miniseries "Salem's Lot", based on the Stephen King book, that was on tv a few years back. It's a vampire tale, but since it was on tv, albeit cable, I knew it wasn't as vicious as, say "Saw". I'd read the book, and knew the plot.
Okay, the kid watches the whole, 3 hour thing. I ask her how it was, and she informs me, in all her 12 year old coolness, that it was "okay... not really scary". Then she goes off to bed.
Next AM, I'm walking by her room at 5:30, when I get up, and I notice that her light is on, so I go in. She jumped right out of bed (a real event, these days!) and I said "Kendall, why is your light on?" She replied "I got a little scared." I replied "Why didn't you come get me?" and she told me it was okay, she had it covered. Then I look over to her bed, and realize that she has taped two sharpened wood pencils together in the shape of a cross! Apparently, she had the vampire thing covered by sleeping with the old double whammy of crucifix AND pointy wooden object! HAHAHAHA!
God, I love that kid!

For Christmas you should make her up a small gag gift, call it an ant-vampire preparedness unit. Find an old first aid kit with a red cross on it, paint the cross black and lengthen the bottom to look like a true crucifix, add a pencil, garlic, holy water and one of those little bibles and you've got a ready made one. -Alan
