Three years ago now, my DH fixed some old tractor tires for me so that I could enjoy gardening very early in spring. The earth becomes friable and warm about 3 weeks before the ground becomes workable and I just love them. In one of them, he put some big branches and I grow climbing beans in there, or morning glories. In the middle, I grow potatoes; they seem to enjoy the warmth and grow fine. I will take some pictures and post them so that you can see!!

I had a friend back east who did her potatoes in stacked tires, and had great success. They sure do get the soil warm ahead of the season.

In Central & South Texas, when we use tires for planters, we usually paint them white or the plants would probably cook in them!
