After an unsuccessful attempt at trying to produce TPS last growing season i'm more hopeful of success this summer after checking out a few of the most advanced scapes, thought i would remove the sheath early to start the bulbil plucking but was surprised to find that there is none visible yet, also considering that its only early summer i feel there's plenty of time for flower development and seed set....fingers crossed.

Good work Joseph, whats the plan now?, when will you sow these? I'm intending to plant them in the next few days. Thus explaining the timing of the photo. Some of them into an unheated greenhouse, and some of them just outside. I'm intending to place cloches (plastic milk bottles) over both plantings. Today Mother Earth News published a blog from me about true garlic seeds. Photos were contributed by members of the forum. Thanks. Landrace Gardening: True Garlic SeedsI like opening the garlic spathes a few days to a week before removing bulbils. That allows the flowers to open up and be more out of the way before trying to remove bulbils. I haven't tested effectiveness, that's just my sense of the matter.

I have always let the sheath fall off on its own and even then I will give it a week. Some plants even wait as long as 3 weeks. The bulbils in the garlic I grow tend to get a little bigger in that week along with turning a darker red/purple making them easier to see. I have also noticed that the flowers go from very lightly colored and compressed to a rich purple and sticking out. Good luck this year. Hope it goes well.

richardw: such soft-looking hands; all that lanolin, I assume; takes gloves to keep mine from getting crusty.

I find a couple of days in the garden and the hands get dry and rough, the misses reckons they are worse than sandpaper, a days shearing and they come up as soft as a babies ase, its not so much the lanolin its that the wool that remains on the sheep polishes ya hands......no complaints from the ol girl then.

I planted all of the garlic seeds today. I put them in an unheated greenhouse, in the dirt, under plastic milk bottle cloches. I dug out the soil under the planter and pasteurized it in the oven to minimize weeds.

I received some true garlic seeds and planted them next to the previous batch on about January 3rd. I also planted some into the same soil on a south facing windowsill inside the house in a room that stays around 60 F. I also planted cloves of Chesnok Red and PI 540319. So I have my three seediest varieties growing side by side in an unheated greenhouse, both as cloves, that are expected to flower, and as seeds. Thanks kazedwards and 12540dumont. There were some extra bulbs and bulbils of Chesnok red that I intend to plant outdoors when the snow melts. The ground wasn't frozen, so I was able to move PI 540319 from the field to the greenhouse.

Love the trail through the snow! Joseph, loved your garlic this year. It's in the field, and it's up! leetle green shoots. I'm about to start onions next weekend. Love the winter. Really nice work.

Today when I checked on the seeds in the windowsill, (Chesnok Red), they are germinating...

That's good to know. I'v been thinking of trying some inside, also in a south window. I have one of those little bottom heating pads. Think they would like that or better to leave them a little on the cool side?

Think they would like that or better to leave them a little on the cool side? I'm thinking they would do better without a heat mat... But, if you have enough seed to do the experiment, might try it both ways.
