Zach, were your spring sown tgs seedlings from your own seeds or Ivan's? what variety are they?

Zach, were your spring sown tgs seedlings from your own seeds or Ivan's? what variety are they? They are from my own harvested TGS. The variety is Chesnok Red aka Shvelisi. It is the same as the bulbils that I sent you.

In February i found this bag of hard neck that i harvested over a year ago hidden on a shelf,its was grown from bulbils and none have shown signs of going off or growing shoots, i planted two lots a month apart. The two lots that were planted in Feb and March have produced totally different results, the Feb plants are short stocky and wide while the March plant cloves are tall and growing a scape which i'm told is very early and may well be turban garlic, we are still in spring here in NZ so this should give me plenty of time to hopefully get seed. Then while cleaning some of my mothers stuff out where she was living a couple of days ago i found a bowl of some of the same bulbs and again they look like they may grow,these are 22 months old, plan is to plant a few and see if they come up. 12 month old bulbs March sown

Long keepers richardw. I've never managed to keep garlic more than about 5 months. I guess the house just gets too cold (I only heat during my waking hours) and they sprout.

Long keepers richardw. I've never managed to keep garlic more than about 5 months. I guess the house just gets too cold (I only heat during my waking hours) and they sprout. We are not in what i would call a warm house raymondo and where the garlic that's 22months old come from was a very stable inside temperature that of a old folks home. Sowed the whole lot yesterday,i just spread a thick layer of cloves over about a square meter and covered with 2-3cm of soil, i dont hold a lot of hope they any will grow..... but..hey, worth a go.

You won't know unless you try. Keep us posted. I've never kept garlic that long either but little surprise. When it gets real cold I've had water freeze in my bedroom. I like to keep the house cool at night for sleeping but that is a bit beyond optimal for that. I guess I don't always keep it that cold. Just that one year where lp gas was $5 a gallon & I decided come heck or high water I wasn't going to buy any. Happy to report I was successful. Price dropped a lot in the spring. Normally low 60's overnight in winter which must be cold enough to cause sprouting. I've got a bag of bulbils I've been digging through after reading this thread. I was hoping for a few seeds but no luck so far. I didn't do any of the prep work like stripping the bulbils & leaving the flowers etc. so if I find a seed it would undoubtedly be a miracle.

Planted out the TGS seedlings along with the rest of the garlic last week. One of the seedlings had been pulled a few months ago and has not shown any life yet. The others were a winter sown batch from last year. 4 of them never died down and are very small but still there. My guess is there root system is being established. They were in a very small and shallow container. The last one I thought was just sprouting but it was a round from this spring that had died down. Must have been one of the first ones that came up. Well I have been going through the garlic seed heads the last few days and finished processing the seed. I am very happy with the results this year. The garlic produced 863 seeds. Yes I did count them to my wife's amusement. That is the final number out of 36 seed heads.

Here is my total harvest of garlic seeds from 2015: 44 seeds. I didn't winnow this year, I threshed in a bowl and picked seeds out by hand. The plants these seeds came from were planted in 5 side-by-side rows about 30 inches apart and 30 feet long. The package marked seediest is from 2 flower heads. The bulbs contained about 9 tall and skinny cloves. It is not one of the GRIN varieties. PI540319 came out of perhaps 100 flowers. I allowed the fruits to fully mature and dry down in the field. I harvested them a bit late, so some seeds fell out of the pods before I noticed it was time to harvest. The packet marked mixed garlic came from 5 flowers with unknown pedigrees.
