Good Morning yall, have a question for the pros on this subject. Im in the market for a new digicam and would like all of your ideas and ups, downs etc...before I go shell out 2 or 3 hundys for one. Looking for something with movie feature w/sound. Takes excellent macro close-ups. Zoom from 28m, to....90m or greater. As you can see, I dont want a little bitty pocket cam, I need something with some bite! But not too much. Thanks.....Blane

Blane-I am no expert on cameras at all, I just went to Walmart and got the most expensive one they had. I'm not proud of shopping at WM, but I live in Orange Co IN and there aren't many choices locally. I ended up with a Canon Powershot S3IS and have been happy with it. It was in the $300 range. It was easy enough for me to figure out on the auto settings, I don't mess with all the other features. You can take short videos with it. I have pics posted at picasaweb.google.com/plantsnobin You can get an idea of the photos it takes there.

The camera I've been using this year is my yougest daughter's Samsung Digimax 500 - a cheap Walmart special. I have to say, compared to my other daughter's expensive Panasonic I started out on, it's much easier to use and takes much better pictures, not to mention it also does short videos. I think it was less than $200.00 a year ago. It's also about 1/4 the size and weight of the panasonic, which is really nice.
You can look at the "Garden Pictures" thread at IDiG to see the panasonic pics - most of the pics Ive posted here in the last 8 or ten months have been with the Samsung. Telling comparison...

Blane, I have a Fuji FinePix S700, which I really like (and still need to learn how to use more of the features) but it has all the features like sound, movie, macro (very nice), and it wasn't too pricey!!! I did a lot of research, and our old camera was a Fuji Finepix as well, which we really liked, (till I dropped it in the lake on a camping trip this summer.) so that's another reason we went with Fuji. An excellent site for camera reviews www.steves-digicams.com/

Let's just say my husband didn't yell at me for my stupid move, and that another reason why I love him. Yeah, it was one of those trying to get a really good shot of the kids standing by the water, and me forgetting I was wearing sandals, stepping across mossy rocks to try and get the shot. Wipeout in the lake. Nice new camera though!!!

Since I already had a kodak easyshare from 2004....I decided to stay with them. This was my choice, so all the old photos would just combine with the new ones in my computer...it was easier than having 2 different files for pic. This is a Kodak Z1275, it also shoots movies w/sound, and has a Whopping 12 mega-pix. Sandbar, Ive mentioned before that I am a year round grower, however this does come with risk, as you get snow.....we get tornadoes. Alls fine for now, thanks ....Blane.
