Something orflo wrote in the Chaerophyllum thread made me wonder about germinating old Apiaceae seed. I've tried a number of times to germinate both caraway (Carum carvi) and cumin (Cuminum cyminum) bought as spices. I haven't had any luck but I wonder if chilling them for a month would help. Thoughts?

Is it possible they're dried in a heated dehydrator before marketing? That might kill them. I think that's why I can't get dried-for-culinary-use chiles' seed to germinate.
I got some (poor) germination from spice-rack cumin this year, but I put that down to age, about 5 years.

cumin come up for me in my cool weather just fine, I am likely 50 to 60F most days, and somewhere from 45% to 85% humidity, and wind at 3 to 5mph my issue is that it dies about 2 weeks later.

Many times spices from the store are irradiated. So, they will never germ.
