Anyone growing saffron? I've had a hundred bulbs in since autumn, got a half a dozen flowers, nice quality, but 6 flowers out of 100 is pretty poor return. Been thinking of leaving in the ground over summer, but it means sacrificing one of my summer vege beds I've read a bit on inducing flowering in saffron, was wondering if anyone had experience with this beast? Yes.
Domesticated Saffron is so badly damaged from built-up virii it is not worth my time to grow. It is sickly, blooms poorly, the plants are downright UGLY, and is prone to dying out.
I don't grow Crocus sativa anymore; I grow its wild ancestor C. cartwrightianus. Smaller flowers and smaller saffron threads, but it works, and unlike its triploid derivative it does not have deformed flowers, and it does not die out as easily but on the contrary may actually naturalize, especially if you let some flowers go to seed. It is also a very charming end-of-season bloomer.

I have been growing C. cartwrightianus for about 4 years and never seen it go to seed or even set flowers, I guess it does not like where it is...
