Here is a photo of my carrot landrace: The roots that I have just transplanted into a bed so they can be undisturbed to grow seed next summer. Most of these roots grew from seeds produced in my garden last summer. As I finish digging the carrots this fall, I'll be looking for some purple and some red rooted carrots to add to the seed patch. Mostly I have ended up with Daver's and half-Nantes types because they are easier to dig in my clayish soil.

Nice work. What kind of transplant bed are you using?

Nice work. What kind of transplant bed are you using? Just a spot along the edge of one of my fields where I will not till this fall. I buried the tops of the carrots about 2" to 3" under the top of the soil. I expect to mulch it later on with straw. I raised the area slightly and built a berm/drainage around it so that there won't be any standing water.

Do you taste on each carrot before growing them to seeds? Those I know growing carrot seeds always taste on each individual carrot, to get what they want in future.

During the growing season they all taste the same to me.... Maybe next year. I spent some time today tasting supposedly homozygous sugary enhanced sweet corn. I figure that 30 out of 32 were actually homozygous. Next year I figure that I'll taste radishes....

I find significant taste/consistency variations between the individual roots of same variety, and I find this is true for most non hybrid varieties.

Very nice Joseph. I'm also in an area without Queen Anne's Lace, so I'm going to do a variety trial and try to come up with my own sort of carrot grex. Up until now, I've been growing very small carrots. But with this experiment I'm looking for bigger carrots that I can slice and dehydrate and juice.
