Does anyone know whether this is any different from common garlic other than possibly being a local landrace? I've seen it it health food stores before and the cloves are very small. www.garrysun.com/himalayan.html

Looking at the package I see small bulb in hard shells, as also described in the text. I see this in elephant garlic and perennial leeks, but never in true garlic! I don't say it elephant garlic, just that it isn't garlic. I guess there are several alliums with these hardshelled sidebulbs. Anybody else with an oppinion on this?

I agree toad. It looks a lot like the underground bulblets that some leeks, including elephant garlic, produce.

Both sites are scams! One says that there are only 62 varieties of garlic in the world. Second claims that the garlic grows at -10ÂșC. It does have one thing right and that's that those "bulbs" form in the soil around 3 or 4 "bulbs" in the middle. What they are selling are elephant garlic corms. I've never seen 20-30 around one bulb but have seen a dozen or more.

you know, i grew lokalon this past year (true garlic var.) and got lots of very similar little cloves up above the main bulb. weird little things, from about an inch to 6" up the stalk. they look a lot like these things.

This garlic is real. I have seen it. ITs not a fake scam. Its a single pearl garlic. It has a very hard double skin and the inside is very different from the regular garlic and its not that pungent. What I wanted to confirm is if this grows above the ground. Has anyone seen the plant. Cannot seem to find anything on the net.

Just search for elephant garlic corms. That's what they are. No true garlic makes them, only leeks. Elephant garlic is a leek.
