Onion Leek Review 2011
Alisa Craig Medium yields of large onions - Bountiful
Bleu de Solaise Smallest leeks in trial, perhaps should have been left in field longer. Solstice
Cippolini Medium yield of medium onions - Bountiful (these seeds better than Johnny’s but not as good as Seeds of Italy)
Giant Zittau low yields of very large onions - Bountiful
Jaune du Poitou Great yields, good leek. Seed Source - Solstice
Li’toi’s Onion This is a multiplier and is still filling a 12 inch pot, bulbs received in poor condition. Sat in Black Mailbox for 1 week at temperatures 80 degrees plus.
Native Seed Search
Mill Creek Red Large yields of a small to medium red onion
keeping very well in storage. Seed source Bountiful, offers very few seeds
Red Torpedo Most of these eaten by gopher, the rest harvested early. This worked out really well as an early onion for the CSA - Bountiful (Seeds of Italy is a better torpedo)
Scotland Huge leeks, almost too big, perhaps these need to be harvested earlier. Solstice
Valencia Medium yield of small bulbs, these were the first to be harvested. Bountiful
All of the above were started from seed (except Li’toi’s). In a separate patch we also had Walla Walla from plants. The Walla Walla were the first to begin to bolt and were harvested very early. The Valencia were the next. Lots of gophers in the Red Torpedo, these were harvested very early. Onions were planted in January and transplanted in April. Harvest began in June. October 2010 planted winter onions that began harvesting in April 2011.
Leek harvest began September and ended first week of October 2011.
