I love their taste, but rarely grow them. Cabbages of really good quality (raw) are available at the market, but it's like a gamble - sometimes you hit good one and sometimes mediocre one. Frankly I have not eaten a really good (sweet) kohlrabi since quite many years and they are not as readily available as cabbages are.
I would like to breed something that fits my taste preferences, but I would like to start with some really good varieties.
There are not so many kohlrabi varieties. I already ordered about 10 and will order a few more, but still if someone can recommend me a really good variety (no matter hybrid or OP) that will be great.
It's hard (read impossible) for me to trial even 1% of the cabbage/savoy varieties available, so here I need some recommendations to start with. I have googled, but most sources are commercial and I do not trust their opinions/descriptions. Found a few (seemingly) trustworthy opinions coming of people which seems know what they are talking about, about the variety Discovery F1. Looks like this variety has been really exceptional, unfortunately it's no longer offered by the breeder. Quite luckily I found it still in stock at an eBayer of which I was ordering a bunch of other seeds.
Even if I do not trust the commercial sources will mention two such:
Johnny's Tendersweet F1 www.johnnyseeds.com/p-5528-tendersweet-f1.aspx sounds very good and I tend to trust Johnny's decriptions. The bad thing is due to crop failure there are no seeds available and the only source still offering seeds (obviously of past years) do not ship outside NA.
The second source www.seedman.com/cabbage.htm lists a variety that looks like savoy and has showy description, but on top of that they do not ship outside NA, no one else offers this "Sweetstuff" variety (there are a few sites which actually look like mirror sites), so I tend to believe that this name is fabricated (unless they are the breeders, and I doubt this) and have no reason to believe in their description.
Is there other top quality varieties you know of? Thanks!
