Stephen - Climatic conditions here and in Trondheim seems quite similar. Your Winters are even milder than ours I guess because of Golf Stream. Do you have any idea what is average GDD10C there? My local variety outperformed "Stampede" from USA but tubers look very similar (yellow, knobby). It would be interesting to try "Dagnøytral" variety. I could send you my local JA variety if you are interested in. Yes, our winters are probably slightly milder, but being further north we don't have any diurnal variations in temperature in winter (as there's no or little sun). Our minimum temperature record in 2010 was about -24C, whereas I understand yours was -26C. Our summers will be cooler though and summer temperature certainly has a big impact on first flowering of Jerusalem Artichoke "Dagnøytral". I found an article with a map of GDD5C if that helps: met.no/Forskning/Publikasjoner/Publikasjoner_2002/filestore/klima-02-02.pdfI'll send you a PM concerning trading varieties.

For 2011 I calculated GDD10C as 617 at Trondheim / Vaernes, airport

Thanks, Joseph. Summer 2011 was a fairly normal summer temperaturewise and my Dagnøytral and Stampede started flowering towards the end of September.

Our Winter record was 1940 or 1941 -43 degrees Celsius. Last two Winters I have seen personally temperatures lower than -30. GDD10C 617 is a lot lower than we have. Should not it be 1617!?

Joseph, is there any way I could get in on the seeds? I'd really love to grow these beautiful chokes. I've had success with them before, but from tuber propagation. Plus, they were almost too knobby for culinary use. I don't know what variety it was as I got them in a supermarket. They don't sell them anymore.
I'd love to trade for the seeds. I have many tomato varieties and some other veggies if you are interested. Thanks!

Iva: I harvested plenty of seed this fall. Send me your address in a personal message. I'll gladly swap for your earliest tomato. Ahto: I ran the math again to double check... I got the same result for the airport in Trondheim Norway in 2011: GDD 10C = 617. I also ran calculations for other cities: GDD 10C was 907 for 2011 in Tallinn Estonia at the EETN airport. GDD 10C was 603 in 2011 at weather station IVIKHAMM3 in Vikhammer, Malvik, Norway (10.62E,63.43N) Helianthus is more cold tolerant than many other species, so 5C might be a better baseline to use, especially in such cool northerly climates where almost everything that is grown is cold tolerant. That data can be downloaded at degreedays.netEdit: p.s. I reread the original post in this thread: it didn't specify a base temperature... I blithely assumed 10C because that's what I use in my garden. If I use a base of 5C for Tallin for April through September 2011 it works out to GDD 5C = 1648. And 1355 for Trondheim Norway.

Thanks joseph!
It seems that local statistics indicating 1700-1900 degrees bases on GDD5C and not GDD10C.

GDD 10C was 603 in 2011 at weather station IVIKHAMM3 in Vikhammer, Malvik, Norway (10.62E,63.43N) Vikhammer is where I get the train to work, 1km from my home, and representative for my garden, but I didn't know there was a weather station there!

Mike, you are a wealth of information! If you want to try a standard variety (don't know, from a market), let me know and I can give you some of mine too. I also have a red type from Tourne-sol. Mad Dog just returned my cheque. They have had medical problems and can't ship any of their roots. And Mapple is in the same situation. There are no chokes in Canada, it seems. Can I take you up on your offer at this late moment?

What??? I have Jeruselum Artichokes for you. Do not worry When will you be in the area? I should have two types by the way assuming they both overwintered well. How are you doing for sweet potato slips? I could spare a few tubers too.

We'll be in Ottawa for Mother's Day visiting our son and granddaughter. And also picking up an Apothecary rose from Galetta.
This could work out well. I'll email you travel details. Many thanks.

Oh good. I can try and dig you up some hawthorns as well. We've had weird, unpredictable weather patterns here and they are calling for -5C for a low on Saturday... Then it's going to swing way up again.

I know to seeds I need few (a lot cross varieties) I have variety "chinese", "stampete" and "aurora rubin", should it enought to produce seeds? Is there here somebody who has seeds from many varieties? Could you send seeds to me to (midle) Europe? of course I would pay it before ...
(I would like get hybrids with h. annus too, if somebody has ...) I would like start breeding ...
