There really are many places they might be grown in North America. For example, the Truckee California region in the Sierra Nevada mountains has very cool summer temperatures with snow on the ground year round in certain areas. Many of the currently quiet volcanos along the Pacific coast have snow year round at higher elevations. If someone lived in Weed, California, which has a pretty normal climate, they could drive a few miles and plant them on Mt Shasta which is always cold at higher elevations.
