I found some very small grey shallots in a box in the closet. Some are starting to sprout. Should I plant them now? (It's getting pretty cold here in Ashland, Oregon)

I plant Grey Shallots (variety Griselle) in autumn here and they survive frozen ground for several months and temperatures down to -23C, so your climate shouldn't be a challenge for them! Grey shallots are recognised as a diffferent species, Allium oschaninii.

I didn't realize they are a different species. The collector in me is coming out... I agree with Stevil and would add that I would avoid a damp spot just in case they are subject to rot (which I understand is a problem in milder climates).

When I saw a picture of it, for a moment I thought it was the same as the Rakkyo I bought for planting at the Japanese supermarket, but that is yet another species (Allium chinense)
