I let a family grow food on my block and their three boys (6 to 12) are keen watermelon eaters. To interest them in plant breeding I suggested to them that we try to develop a watermelon that will ripen well here, despite the coolish summers. I really got their attention when I suggested we try this with yellow and/or orange fleshed watermelons. I've ordered everything locally that has either yellow or orange flesh and also all of Baker Creek's offerings in these colours. The boys are excited and are now looking forward to next summer, a full twelve months away. I must say that I'm excited too. Their boyish enthusiasm is catching.

Ray, After I plant this season, I'll send you anything I can find that's orange or yellow, if you need them.

I've never grown it, but Orangeglo is supposed to be a great one.

Thanks Holly. I'll post what I've got when the Baker Creek order arrives. Watermelon, in fact almost all Cucurbitaceae, are okay to import so I can order what I want from anywhere.
Oxbow, Orangeglo is the only watermelon I've grown that ripened here and gave delicious fruit. Sugar Baby ripened in the same year but the flavour left a lot to be desired. Orangeglo is definitely going to be in the mix.
