I was starting some shallots today and had an urge to start more seeds. I am wondering how much I could push the starting of brassicas (broc, caul, cab). I know I will be able to plant in very early April this year. So how big can brassica seedlings be when planted? Has anyone started them too early? Normally I start them in early March and plant out around mid April 4-6 weeks ahead. What about 8-10 weeks ahead?

Heck Minnie, I bet you could get them to germinate outside NOW if you put a plastic grow tunnel over the ground. Silly weather. Has me twitchy.

I'm harvesting! Weeks too early. These were for the March CSA teaser basket. I'm going to have to replant. Bugger. Minnie, my cousins all say it feels like Early Spring in MN. Attachments:

Yeah it is gorgeous right now. I was going to get compost this week but my truck needs some repair. How odd to haul compost in February! We are supposed to get 2" of snow Monday - we'll see.

I know where i am if i start to early when the weather is at its most changeable that brassicas will often bolt to seed instead

Today's basket: Greens, Greens, more greens, asparagus, broc, cauli, tangerines and eggs. None of this is supposed to be ready until March! The chickens are laying like crazy. One old biddy decided to start sitting. Attachments:
