Like the rest of you, I just wish that I could have known Dan longer and gained more of his wisdom. Dan wrote this to me in one of his PM's and I'm certain that he would not mind me sharing with his friends on HG:
"As you have, I have also had a couple of looks into the abyss in the past = near misses that should have taken me, but didn't even knock the wind out of me. The realization of how close the end had come, has shaped the way I think and feel, and the way I approach the world. Unfortunately, time tends to let one forget that it can all end in a heartbeat, so you should pay more attention to what marvels are all around you. I do not consider this encounter with cancer to be in the same class of event as those of the past, but it is a good wake up call, to remind me of the gifts I have always enjoyed, and tell me to see what is there. I will never be known as a world shaker, and never had the desire to be such, but I do what I can to start making little ripples that might help change things a bit. First, I expect people to treat me as I intend to treat them, and am seldom disappointed. Beyond that, pay it forward is always a good way to send out ripples of change = people just do not expect it. I will sign off now, or babble all night. Cheers Dan"
Dan, I will see you in Heaven.
David

Thanks Marj for letting us know. I had sent Dan a note on the 12th and hadn't had an answer. I was telling Leo that I was worried, but all I could do was e-mail him.
No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
Dan's death in particular diminishes me. He was a friend and co-conspirator of the garden sort. So long Dan.
What will happen to Shaoling? Will she be okay?

What a terrible loss. Dan and Val had an incredible reach, just glancing through the SSE yearbook you can see many many mentions of seeds originating from them. Very sad yet very inspirational, how many lives and gardens they touched.

Very sad. He was good and generous man. He will be remembered fondly every time I grow tomatoes from seeds that I originally got from him. Remy

Unfortunately I haven't been on much of late. Dan was a fantastic fellow and always had a lot to share with us. He and Val were both at the forefront of this forum and huge part of the reason it is as big and amazing as it is now. Dan will be missed deeply. The important thing is we have his legacy to share to help keep he and Val alive in everyones gardens. Dan knows the mysteries now and is back with Val, he will always be there just beyond us sharing those mysteries with us and giving us a good kick in the ass when we are being a bit more lethargic with our gardening and farming and posting than we should be. Love to you Dan. One day we will meet somewhere far from this place where tomatoes never blight and water turns itself to wine without intervention.

I just happened to come on today... val... now Dan... I'll miss them. Generous folk indeed.
...has someone copied their website before it becomes history? ...or is it already history? ...I don't know how to do that sort of thing.
Is all their seed work now going to fade back into the canadian dust? ....who is on the farm now? ...
