I was in a parents meeting yesterday morning at Stephens College. I was astounded at how many ringing cell phones went off during the meeting! These people are so rude to leave their phones turned on at a time like that! At the very least they could set them to vibrate instead of ring. Am I the only one who thinks we have gone totally nuts with this cell phone culture?! Can we not live without them for a couple of hours at a time?

I was at a ceremony last Friday for young people getting their Pilot's licences. One of the guest speakers wives (an Air Force wife at that), sitting in the front row, had a purse that was nothing short of a suitcase. Her phone started to ring, a loud musical multiple type ring, that continued on for at least 3 minutes, while she just kept telling her extremely embarassed and annoyed husband that she couldn't find her phone!!
I hate the things. They have to be one of the worst inventions there is. They are disruptive. And they are dangerous.

I can definitely see the use for them - as a parent with 2 kids going constantly to this-that-or-the-next-thing, it's nice to have a way of communicating. But I do think that people are out of control with them... there is no need to have a conversation about NOTHING as you go bulleting down the highway while also drinking a latte! (Or, like you guys said, to be able to hear it at any type of function.) As to ring tones... I do like messing with mine. Andre recorded the kids saying "Mom?!" over and over, like they want something from me, and that plays when the house phone calls my cell. When Andre calls me, the phone plays "I Love It When You Call Me Big Poppa" by Notorious BIG. Otherwise it plays the Ramones....

I've never had one. Can you tell?
They aren't the only causes of carnage, but they certainly are a major factor.
I had an incident on my way to work last winter. Snow covered highway. Only myself and a fancy giant SUV (Lincoln perhaps?? I dunno) slams on his brakes and stops dead in the middle of the road to take a call. Hullo..........Rich Dude...I'm back here behind you, trying to make it to work to pay for my 5 year old truck...Thankfully I was in 4wD..
Guess What I Said to Him?? Take That Phone and Shove It!!!!
But then again, there was the mini-van that was weaving and bobbing across both lanes a while back...Turns out she wasn't DWI. Instead, she was reading a book at 50 mph...
Take that Book and Shove It!!!
So remember, keep your eyes and ears on the road...

Ain't it amazing what some people think they can do while they're driving? (Hold on, the light's about to change, and I'm almost done typing this. LOL!)

Oh Kimi, That's so sad to think that people wouldn't have the decency to turn their phones off during a funeral. Sorry to hear that your family had to endure that.

Unfortunately, Down, most of the people who yap insessantly on their cell phones, and don't mute them at important events are the same folks who never did have any manners, and are probably blaming the caller for making the phone ring, rather than themselves for not turning it off.
I have to say, I couple this failure to turn the things off at inappropriate times with the failure to realize that no one around you wants to hear your conversation. Have you noticed how many folks are having very private conversations while standing in line for the bank, or the grocery? A couple years ago, I was in the grocery store produce section, and happened to be in a similar shopping pattern with a woman like this. She was going on and on with a friend of hers about the slutty behavior of another friend of theirs the night before, in details! At one point, she said she had another call, and it was quickly obvious that the break-in caller was the "slut" from the first conversation. She was standing right next to me when she started telling this second friend that she was certainly not going to discuss last night's behavior, and of course she knew that girl three was "really not like that". So I just raised my voice a bit and said towards the phone "Don't believe her! The entire produce section of Top Foods knows what you did last night!" The woman with the phone was pissed off, but too bad. She had told me all the salacious details. And I don't think I should have had to leave that area of the store just to avoid hearing them. I still think it was pretty funny.

HA HA I bet that girl had fun straightening that mess out. I am surprised that there was not a catfight in the produce dept.

hahahah, that's hillarious and deserved too! I've never owned a cell phone.......and really don't plan on owning one (though I guess with a business I probably should). One thing I hate though is people who drive and talk on the cell phone........if your gonna talk on the cell phone while driving your license plate number should be the same as your phone number so I can call you up and tell you about it! I too have whitnessed idiots reading and driving.....and indeed acts of a somewhat more scandolous nature involving two consenting adults on the roadway......while entertaining, also dangerous and a bad idea! (unless it involves me j/k)

I've never owned a cell phone.......and really don't plan on owning one (though I guess with a business I probably should). Well...I would like it if you had one if for no other reason than for it to be a way that I know I can get ahold of you in an emergency. I don't like the idea of not being able to get ahold of you immediately when I need you anyhow... What would I do if I were in a car accident and needed to get ahold of you and you weren't home, or if I got hurt at work?? I mean, you'd get the information one way or the other. But in order of calling, it'd be you, then Mom and Dad. And out of the three, you and Dad would be the quickest/closest to get there. I don't care if you use it all the time or not, but I'd like you to have one on you and on (at least on vibrate) for emergencies. *** As for scandalous distractions while driving...No comment.
