I was cutting up a rutabaga the other day and noticed that, like just about every single one we grew this year, it had a little hollow spot in the middle that had browned a bit around the edges. No biggie; trim it out and procede, but I wonder if anyone has any insight into what might cause this.
I am assuming either irregular watering or a boron deficiency. What say ye all?

Beets go wonky without boron, how were your beets?

Beets were fine. So; watering?

I suspect a simple boron defficiency my friend. Never had that problem with them when water (rain) was less than ideal, I used to get though fibrous ones...
Boron is cheap and is considered organic anyway, a one pound bag goes a long way in a garden..

Okay, I didn't want to think that it was boron. *sigh*. Next question; I don't think I've ever seen it for sale. Where would we get it? Local co-op?

Just dissolve a tablespoon of borax in a 5 gallon bucket of water for like a 100 foot row.
