Okay, guys, so tell me something. If someone you don't really know makes an ethnically charged joke, do you sometimes take offense? I mean, if your friend makes a Jewish joke, and you know he isn't a bigot, or maybe you know he's Jewish, you can laugh if you find it funny. (And if you think I'm wrong about that, that's okay, tell me.) But if someone just types it on a website, it might be some neo-nazi thoughts coming through, right? You just don't really know if they're being mean.
Carlos Mencia says that if you can make the joke to a person of that race/religion/persuasion then you can make the joke. I just read a couple recently that were kind of offensive, and I'd like other opinions. I'm generally not the most PC person out there, but I don't go out of my way to offend either. (It just comes naturally, I guess! )

LG, I think I know which jokes you're talking about. Let me just say that I'm really starting to feel ashamed that I contributed to that particular thread, even though mine weren't ethnic in nature. I agree, the more I think about them, the more they turn my stomach. Yes, they do seem rather offensive, two in particular, and other members of the forum have pointed them out, along with their comments. I just don't know what to do about the situation, as I'm afraid that anything I post will sound like a CYA routine, which it isn't. Do you think I should "issue a statement", or let bad enough alone?

I think you made a good point in your last post on that thread. The entire thread doesn't bother me, it was just the few kind of nasty ethnic ones that did. And then the folks who were telling those of us who were offended that we were basically PC pansies or whatever... I guess I'm mildly concerned that since I consider the person who started the thread to be rather ignorant, my personal bias against him might be coloring my perception of the jokes. Or is that too PC, and should I just write him off as a jackass and be done with it?
For those of you who haven't read the thread, here's a link: idigmygarden.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4913

I'll jump in here. I stand by my statement on the thread, word for word.
Andy, your jokes were just funny, not offensive - I'd let it stand at that.
I think if someone were to report it to the real authorities, there would be hell to pay.

LG, I don't think your personal opinion is too far from the mark, and I think you're right on the mark as to his taste in jokes. I just wish I hadn't helped to "validate" the thread by firing off a few jokes of my own. No, validate isn't the right word, but it's not coming to me...something along the lines of justify...maybe validate IS right. Anyway, I didn't get the impression you were being called PC or pansy. BTW, thanks for your opinions, both of you. They mean a lot to me!

Andy, I didn't read any of the thread except the very last reply that was up before I left for work, so I can't comment on what you posted. But I think by now I know you well enough to say that you wouldn't knowingly say something to hurt.
It's over. The post has been removed.

Thank you, Blue. I wasn't too concerned about my jokes (although the one about the flies was a little risque, and could have raised a "family values" flag). I was more mad at myself for perpetuating the thread, especially after rereading WU's first and last jokes (the most offensive of the lot).

Now see... I've already repeated the one about the flies, Andy! I was glad to see someone deleted the thread... I hope they bothered to tell the author why.

I'd have to say it's pretty sad if they HAD to tell him why! The why should have been pretty obvious, I would think.

See, we're going back to my personal assessment of that person's social IQ. REALLY unsure as to his understanding of why it might be offensive. Ah well... deep breath and let it go. ;D

Okay, someone just told me they think this guy's 17 years old. That certainly explains why he has the social smarts of a, um, 17 year old!!! Doesn't excuse the racial overtones, but mitigates, for sure. Where are the parents in all of this?

They removed the thread... Winter Unfazed told some crude "How many (blank) does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" jokes. There were probably 10 or 12 of them, but the really rude ones involved cheap Jews and terrorist Muslims. Poor taste, really. Other jokes were added to the thread, but they were innocuous. (Andy's fly joke has gotten much play in our house, actually, although it was like a shade or two off polite. ;D)

Ok, for everybody who missed it the first time around:
How many flies does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Just two, but it's a real pain getting them inside!
