i'm looking for a reference (whether book or website) that's got lots of varieties of apples represented with descriptions. i got some scion this year that may be a different variety than what i requested (most likely not the nursery's fault - i wasn't the one placing the order), and i want to know more about the variety it actually may be.
direct info about the specific variety, crown jewel, would be fine, too, but i'd love to be able to look stuff up myself, so book titles/websites are welcome, too.

khoomeizhi,
older books-these I like because of the descriptions and pictures.
The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America by A. J. Downing The American Apple Orchard by Frank A. Waugh
The Fruit Garden by Patrick Barry
Apples of New York (forgot author)(two volumes?)
newer book- Apples for the 21st Century by Warren Manhart
Hope these are helpful to you, am sure there are many more, as others here could say. olddog

Hi there. Here in the UK I use this website for looking varieties up: www.keepers-nursery.co.uk/search.aspxThey have a huge amount of all types of apples. I used them to find some old local varieties from my county to grow. Most of the apples have good descriptions, pollination dates etc. You can't browse until 30th April as they are updating their stock, but you can use the Advanced Search feature right away. Hope this helps.
