Poor possums! Brought to California unwilling, doing the best they can (which seems to be pretty good), generally unloved and misunderstood. Mostly they don't seem to fight with cats; I've seen them crouched near each other, neither being apparently more than watchfully concerned. One shouldn't hate them just because they're (not) beautiful. I admit to liking them because they're so geeky and ineffectual and they get along with us just fine, which so many more beautiful creatures cannot do at all, which I suspect is our fault, not theirs.
Hope your cat (another immigrant species of which I am very fond) is well.
Shoot and eat that (native) deer; feed some to your cat; leave some for the possum.

I remember in the early eighties, seeing, in a local supermarket, boar's heads for sale around Christmas. I have no idea who they thought were going to buy those in a blue-collar, mostly un-white, part of Oakland. I never saw that, before or since. Tamales. For New Years Day.

There's also Sichuan Pork Cheeks and Guanciale, the famed Italian bacon, is made sometimes from the cheeks but also from the jowls of the pig. There's even a wine/tomato Italian Braised cheeks.
I just like it when the butcher has them separated, because I don't have room in my fridge for a whole head. Besides, then it stares at me like green olives with pimentos and I can't face that first thing in the morning.
They're getting hard to find. It's possible to get them from Ranch 99, Marin Sun, maybe still you can find them at Lien Hing in Chinatown. If you're raising your own pig, Serious Eats has some recipes for this sort of thing.
As for the unwilling possum, broke into the hen house and ate the eggs a chicken was sitting on. I just found out that Possum Pie does not have possum in it. This is the best I can do. I don't have a deer license and Leo would not let me chum it in with apples. I would not have a clue on how to skin a deer or butcher it. (But if someone was to do that for me, I make an awesome stew).
Possum and Taters
Ingredients: 1 young, fat possum 8 sweet potatoes 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon sugar salt
Directions: First, catch a possum. This in itself is excellent entertainment on a moonlight night. Skin the possum and remove the head and feet. Be sure to wash it thoroughly. Freeze overnight either outside or in a refrigerator. When ready to cook, peel the potatoes and boil them tender in lightly salted water along with the butter and sugar. At the same time, stew the possum tender in a tightly covered pan with a little water. Arrange the taters around the possum, strip with bacon, sprinkle with thyme or marjoram, or pepper, and brown in the oven. Baste often with the drippings.
The cat is sulking. Has a nasty bite on the neck.

Possums literally have more teeth than any other mammal; they can bite when they've a mind to; like so many of us, the older they get, the more cranky.
It might help the cat's recovery, to have a bit of roast possum; hair of the dog, as it were.
