Hello,
I am Frans Geraets. I saw this link in the statistics of my site. I am just beginning. Still clipping scions of my only mothertree. I want to see my crossing results earlier and am looking for SHIAWASSEE WALNUT or some other big and full nut bearing regia walnuts.
rainy and cold here, but sun will shine more this summer. Frans Geraets

Shame on ME? I'm not the one with giant WALnuts.... It's Frans' fault!
Good luck with this endeavor by the way. I'm eager to hear how it goes. I'm working on getting hazelnuts established on my property. I want to get several trees of each of the 4 size categories. Hazel's don't self pollinate so you need to have at least 3 varieties for decent pollination. Also, I would HOPE that the local wildlife will indulge themselves with the smaller nuts leaving me with the larger. I intend to have the small nutted trees closer to the forest and the larger nutted trees closer to the house.

Some time ago we had a walnut tree with giant nuts, but the kernel was somewhat skinny. The tree dried out 7-8 years ago. Every autumn I see on the farmers markets different giant walnuts, but usually they are with skinny kernels. Walnuts are the most common wild/feral nut tree here and there is quite big variability among the many trees, including with very big nuts, though they are very rare compared to the other sizes.

The hexaploid experiment is in the drain. I thought the seedlings in the pots wilted their leaves from drought, so I put them in a bucket of water. After a week I decided to plant them in the field. Everything under the surface was black and rotten. I read in a rose-forum that roses have not like maize three-cellular pollen but bi-cellular. Walnut as well. These are threated on the stamen, so their spermcell does not devide underway to the egg-cell. Maybe next year.
Sad but that is how it goes. Frans
