My grandpa started building a house when he was 62 and finished it 8 years later at 70. When the last nail was driven it was paid for. He built the entire thing with cash a little at a time. He lived on social security and sales from several summer gardens (all 10 or more acres) in size. I asked grandpa why he didn't just borrow the money and build his house and I'll never forget his reply; he said well I didn't feel like I had 30 years left to make the payments. Two of the largest blessings in my life has been my parents and grandparents; who taught me to avoid debt like the black plague
