Dar ~ Did you take any pics of your sword beans? (pods & seeds) I'd love to see what they look like, just to see if they are the variety that my dad was growing in the mid 80s.

Jospeh, I think seed coat is maternal tissue so differences would have to be from an earlier cross that is beginning to segregate. Reversals are reasonably common and are not genetically controlled, or don't appear to be. By reversal I mean a two-colour pattern suddenly being reversed - what was red is now tan and what was tan is now red, if that makes sense. It's taken me this long to be ready to respond... I had some reversals show up in last year's Dammeron Valley heirloom pole bean. I thought that they were really cool, so I planted them along with the regular beans. I finished shelling the harvest today. No beans with the reversed color scheme showed up. If you hadn't mentioned reversal, I would have attributed it to poor germination.
