The City of Toronto (Ontario) is among 17 cities and 7 countries worldwide participating in Earth Hour in just a few minutes (8 to 9 pm EST) in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If you don't know about this movement, there are still ways you can participate in your daily lives. Okay, gotta go turn off the lights!! See you in an hour. www.earthhour.org/

It's 10 degrees outside and my furnace is off and my fireplace is blazing ... does that count?

Most of the lights were out at our house, but I did open the fridge several times to get beer... if I read by the fridge light, do I still get to call myself green? Provided I'm multi-tasking, I mean. ;D Thanks for the cool link, Blue!

One has to do, what is necessary to survive of course! Even cavemen recognized the importance of fire and fermentation!! Compromised here as well. Puter off, but not the tv I sat at the kitchen table and knit by lamplight, while listening to the sound of chicks hatching by candlelight (and television light) in the livingroom. Oh, and Paintman needed lights on to go to the basement to refill the woodstove. We forgot to do that beforehand. But still, we did our part in our own little way. Glad you like the link Lav.

OOPs, it's actually supposed to be on March 29, 2008. What was I thinking?? It was in the newspaper today and I was reading it at work. Well guess what?? So we did a trial run. At least I know that all the coal oil lamps work.

Woops,
Tv watching is a funny exception.
Good luck in March! It sounds like you had a nice night.

That's okay ... I usually have the furnace off and the fireplace on. I guess on March 29, I got to get serious and microwave dinner or something.

PV, Who needs the microwave? Roast weinies and marshmallows, or sandwiches made with thick sliced crusty bread piled high with deli meat, cheese and tomatoes, toasted over the fire just long enough to heat thru and melt the cheese? Or for a more formal spread, Baked potatoes and cornish pasties wrapped in foil and cooked in the coals....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....candlelight, your favourite beverage.... the Grandkids screaming they want the Cars movie back on...or why can't they watch video games?? Tripping over the coffee table to go let the dog out. And I'm guessing that it's probably NOT the best time to sit down and sort seeds, ya think? LOL

I always make baked potatoes in the woodstove. And I also do squash in there. If you put a little liquid in one of the cavities, it stays moist. You can also heat soup, chili, etc on the top.

Hey ... this Earth hour better not turn into an all-night deal. Yesterday morning it was so cold the condensation on my garage doors ran down and froze the bottom of the doors to the threshhold and when I hit the opener button, the raiser arm pulled right off the bracket! Now I have to try and scrap it all back together. Bummer.

ouch on the garage door! we just use a tarp! ) about 15 here with very strong winds coming out of the north, sucking all the heat out of the cabin. got both woodstoves snappin' and cracklin'. ready to make some blueberry muffins to get a little more heat from the propane stove...any excuse will do! ) we bake potatoes, squash, etc... in the woodstove fire too. slice the potatoes and put a thick slice of onion between them...keeps them moist. and a drop of butter, a bit of apple and some bacon crumbles help the squash halves stay moist and tasty! looking forward, i think, to March 29th...thanks blue! )

Bunkie, I thought that our household was the only one left in the 'civilized' world (although sometimes I don't consider this area civilized, lol) that didn't have a garage door opener, a car starter, an automatic dishwasher OR a Cell Phone (yes FP, Paintman has a work issued cell but I won't use it, and it's usually turned off when he's home. ) Thank goodness I'm not alone!!!
For anyone who is a member on Facebook, there is an Earth Hour Event listed. It's rather impressive when you see how many people have signed up for updates and are planning on taking part!

Um, thanks for sending the muffins via the Internet, Bunkie, but I think something is wrong with your recipie. When I printed out the muffins and ate them, they had a strong, papery taste ... did you go light on the sugar, butter and blueberries? Oh, and they were pretty flat, too. They sure looked nice and fluffy in the picture ... Thanks, anyhow.
