Well thats interesting,my garlic's the same year in year out. Stability: One of the joys of a maritime climate... I notice on weather data from New Zealand that the daily maximum temperature deviation (records) from average temperature is about ±6 C. In my garden, the deviation from average can be as much as ±17 C. If I had any complaint about my growing conditions, it would be the inconsistency from year to year... Makes it hard to depend on a crop, or to plan next year based on what happened this year.

How nice to be consistant.
With the crazy heat wave we are in and mild winter. My garlic came out good a bit samller than last year and a month to a month 1/2 early. But than again they, for the most part, continued to grow all winter, they never really went dormant.

I went to the garlic festival yesterday. There was a lot of talk about our poor season here and the disease they seem to have. I hadn't thought of it as a disease before. It hit some of the varieties badly and some not so bad. I only found 1 variety I was looking for at the festival and bought 7 bulbs of it (Tzan).

I have been growing my Rocambole since around 1986 in the same garden. I got it from a Polish woman that lived in Garfield, NJ. She had been growing it for years. I select the biggest bulbs each year and delay planting till after about an inch of frost in the soil to eliminate any bulbs that show poor storage. I also selected for the largest bulbils. I have some bulbils that are 1/2" in diameter-usually only about 4 to 6, maybe a few more, in the scape. Youtube video of me planting my garlic Dec 19, 2009 just hours before an 18" snowstorm. part 1 youtu.be/Fvmase4jhMAPart 2 youtu.be/0Zcsszj6Los Interesting in this video I found webbing and insect evidence in my Bone Meal. Maybe it is the source of the Drugstore Beetle infestation I wrote about in another thread? Actually I plant garlic cloves. Yes, I feel the larger cloves make the largest bulbs.
