Has anyone tried these? They look really neat. www.osborneseed.com/product-details.cfm?turnip--hidabeni-f1Any idea if they store as well as standard purple tops? I'm going to try some to grow with the purple tops for fall and hopefully winter market. The bright red should help make the display brighter if I they store well and still look nice... We'll see.

I tend to pull them at large marble size and steam them with tops on, very pretty in a long dish, either buttered or balsamic vinegared.

Very attractive. I don't think they'd sell at our local market. People here are very conservative in their food buying habits. Tomatoes should be red, chard should have green leaves and white stalks and turnips should have purple tops!

I actually don't care if they sell if they look intensely red on the table, the winter market displays are pretty dull, I'd like some color to make it pop out at people, even if they just turn around and buy a purple top. I know I can sell the flowering kale though. They've never seen a kale they wouldn't eat in Ithaca. Especially in the winter.

Yes, hadn't thought of it just from marketing aspect. A bit of eye-catching colour would no doubt work well on a dull winter's day.

Have you given any thought to some of the winter radishes and daikons? Fair bit of variety in shape and color there.

There are folks around here who still look crossways at a yellow fleshed watermelon. I figure all I have to do is grow white sweet potatoes and okra, purple peppers, orange tomatoes, and striped zucchini and I should be safe from finger blight. MB

Ox, are there any red turnips that are op?
Last year someone sent me some white turnips (rutabagas?) Fortin's Family? They were sublime. The CSA never saw one....Leo ate them all. However, he forgot not to eat the ones I tagged for seed. Tsk tsk...will I ever find them again?
Turnips Turnips I want colored turnips! Send Seed Links!
Rutabagas too!

Holly, I think both Evergreen Seeds and Kitazawa Seeds sell coloured turnips. Not sure of their hybrid status but hey, you could just dehybridize them.
Drahkk, I think that's exactly what they think - not safe! But flavour, or rather the lack of it, is important too. One year I had a few too many tomato seedlings so gave some to my sister - all red ones becasue I knew she'd baulk at anything else. She loved them remarking that they reminded her of our childhood. Her teenage kids on the hand wouldn't touch them because they tasted too strong! They will only eat supermarket 'tomatoes'!

Holly, the only one I'm aware of is Scarlet Ohno Revival from Wild Garden Seed.

I've grown Vertus Marteau and enjoyed it chopped and braised, leaves and all, with onion and bacon grease. Seed was from BC; didn't grow long, as I gather it's expected to, but round. Very good turnip.

Last year I grew Viola Lunga de blah blah blah from Seeds of Italy. It was a very nice turnip but they are pear shaped and purple topped. People thought something was wrong with them, the color said turnip but the shape didn't, won't grow them again.

People are so conservative about food, it's a wonder we eat more than three veggies, at all. Peas, carrots, and sweet corn, right? If it doesn't come in a TV dinner, it isn't a real veggie.

We were basically unable to sell patty pan summer squash. More for us.
