The U of M has claimed the garlic in MN has aster yellows and it is from the mild winter with no snow and leafhoppers. I have only saved the best, cleanest garlic for replanting and I toss anything stinky, shrivelly or wrongly colored. The guy next to me at market only has German Extra Hardy and the hardnecks got it worse than the softnecks. Lucikly I have many varieties so some did well while others sucked. So he is trying to figure out what to do and how good the garlic needs to be to use for replanting and what will happen if his has it and he replants. I wonder too since I am not positive I will not plant some with it.
I don't want to contradict the U of M or what people are saying they are saying, but I think it was fusarium. Aster Yellows is supposed to be in cool, wet areas. We had the driest and warmest weather of all time in the last 12 months.
