Gets out ladder and slowly climbs on to Soapbox.
I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, on-line businesses that make you 'join' to buy from them. I don't need an 'account' from them. I don't want to join their club. I don't want them keeping information about me. I hardly ever order from a company more than once and if I do, I'd rather re-enter my information than have them keep it. I'm trying to friggin give them money, why do they have to make it so difficult? It should be as simply as here is my money, here's where I want it shipped, this is what I want.
Ugh! It just happened with Victory Seed. I'm going to phone in an order tomorrow. And complain too.
Gets off soapbox and goes and gets a couple of fingers of Makers Mark. Sigh.

As a business manager myself I encourage a good complaint from our customers, I'm one guy in a sea of customers so it's impossible for me to know all the things in our business that contribute to customer dissatisfaction unless one of them actually tells me. One of the most important tools I've found in life and business is constructive confrontation (not yelling and screaming) but assertive constructive verbal confrontation of any real disappointments. Pugs, you are so right! Seems like more and more orders on line capture info for later advertising, doesn't it? And don't give you an easy opt out, either.
Funny enough, there are plenty of on-the-ground stores that do this, too. I went to a clothing store recently, and the girl behind the counter asked for my phone number when I paid cash. I said "I don't give it out." She said that she needed to put it in or the sale couldn't go forward. I said she'd need to make one up, in order to finish the sale. She called her manager! The manager also said the sale couldn't be completed without my phone number. The manager gave me the official company line "We don't use it or sell it, it's just for research purposes" Yeah right! I told her she could put her own number in, or the store's number, but she didn't want to do that. So I said "Well, void the sale then, and I'll buy my clothing elsewhere." Suddenly, it was okay to put in the store's phone number.
There is no way that giving your unrelated-to-the-sale information to a company is a good thing. I truly feel that too much personal info is already being stored by companies. This goes for those grocery store discount cards, too. I give fake info to sign up for those. That way, I get the real price, not the inflated one, on groceries, but no one is tracking what kind of cereal and soap I buy.

I completely agree, Lav. Too much information, and it's not gonna help you to give it, it only helps the companies that ask for it. And I really hate the online ones that make you join too. I just go somewhere else. There are lots of stores out there. I'm not gonna bother with all that stuff. And yes, constructive complaint may help, but not everyone wants to take the time to do so.

LG, I save myself that trouble when they ask for my phone number. Last instance was when my barber was on vacation and I really needed a hair harvest. Went to the local Great Clips and they insisted that I give them my phone number even after I told them I would likely never return. So, I gave them my phone number:
513-894-2211
That's the First Financial Bank Time and Temperature number in Hamilton, Ohio. Have used it for years!

Businesses asking for phone numbers happens around here too. I just say no. I think they are used to it, around here at least, 'cause the don't even challenge it. I don't know what they enter, but then I don't care.
They also ask for zip codes. I've been trying to memorize some way way out of the area obscure one to give them. Anyone have a good one for me? Easy to remember?
It nice to see I'm not the only one that thinks this. Some of my friends think I'm real weird.

25082 Fraziers Bottom, West Virginia. Drove through the town on vacation one day and stopped to take a picture of the post office sign. Gave the picture to a friend (last name Frazier) and asked him why a town in WV had been named after his backside. Believe it or not, they have a WikiPedia entry for Fraziers Bottom! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraziers_Bottom,_West_Virginia (You'll have to cut and paste the link to view it. Ok, not a store story, but an obsure phone # story. I used to work in ER, on slow nights we would be looking for something to stay awake. Dave liked to call different cities temp & temp numbers. One night we called to get the # for Nome, Alaska. We dialed the #, and a real live person answered. She was not a happy camper, and said "Do you know what time it is?" He says, well, no, that's why we were calling. He apologized, told her we were in Salem IN, bored, didn't expect a real person to answer, etc. A co-worker of hers got the phone and we had a nice chat with him. They were some sort of research team or something like that. I don't remember what the temp was, but it was about 1 am in Nome AL.

A few weeks ago at Tractor Supply the lady at the register asked for my phone number.
I smiled real big and said.
;D " I'll give you mine if you give me yours" ;D

Got them. Both easy to remember. I think I'll use them based on what kind of store I'm in. Lumber gets Manhattan, anything upscale (where I rarely go) will get Fraziers Bottom.
