What about yacon Mike,tall enough to suppress out all weeds and then plenty of mulch at the end of the season I don't think so. Very hard to get here. And the tubers would have to make it through the winter in storage to be used again next year. And digging them up would disturb the soil. Having said that, I'd love to have a go at growing yacon in our raised beds to see how they store.

Mike have you thought of using Joseph's pole jabber to stab in... Could also transplant the wheat and rye that way. In non-tilled ground, I am liking metal pipe better than the pvc that I use in the garden. (Makes the levering action easier.) You could weld a small cross bar towards the bottom so you could use your foot to really kick it in.
