It was requested that i try my best to produce some photos of my squash with cutaway views so that the colors of the insides could be evaluated. I apologise that i was not able to take a photo of every squash, but i did get at least one of each kind. They are not the best photo's though.
Hopi White had a lot of green inside and probably is not the best of eating quality. It did however have excellent seed production and seed quality. This might be an excellent variety for seed roasting.
Hopi Black was a monster. I liked this squash for it's size. It was very late season though. Near the edge of my growing season. This squash has obviously been bred for large meat cavity and not bred for good quality seeds. I barely got maybe 20 flat seeds from that whole huge squash while i got probably three times as many plump seeds from a hopi white no bigger than my hand.
Wild Pueblo was a very ornamental squash, but wasn't particularly tasty or repulsive. It does however have a unique leaf trait where it grows two leaves when other varieties only grow one. Very early season, and good growth habitat. Would be an excellent variety to breed with Hopi White.
Since i was only able to harvest a few seeds from the Hopi Black it probably would be best if i only sent the seeds i have available to one person to grow out for a season or two. Someone with a longer growing season than i do just in case. I think i was planning on sending seeds to Darth Slater, Joseph, and Holly. But maybe it would be best to just send them to Holly in order for her to send us all some seeds in a season or two. I think Hopi Black would be excellent if bred with something from Josephs early moschata strain, that way it would grow earlier in my climate.
Here is squash 1. Wild pueblo (with some pillbug damage on the rind).
Photo #2. Hopi White on the left. Wild Pueblo (presumed precocious yellow gene) on the right.
