wow, so green. Love Minnesota. My cousin is coming to visit. Yeah, MN comes to CA! This year, I'm going to start extra onions. PM me, and I'm sending you a bundle. I'd love to have you trial them next to the Dixon onions.

Well we have had a lot of rain lately. I hadn't seen any irrigation going in the fields until today and then it rained again!

Found the yucky larva of the 3 lined potato bug on my tomatillos yesterday. I squished and destroyed lots of egg masses. I will spray soon. Otherwise garden is doing well except for bolting stuff now, as predicted because of the short spring into hot summer. Bok choy was direct seeded and will not have any harvest. I pulled all plants today. Spinach got one full picking and a little prior but will be tilled and reseeded this weekend. Napa have aphids, are bolting and are giving the lady bugs a reason to mate. I am able to harvest some nice big ones and wash the aphids off. I thought the white plastic would prevent bolting better. Summer greens: tatsoi, kale, chard, beet tops, mizuna, komatsuna etc. Tatsoi is bolting despite it being touted as heat tolerant, but it still tastes good. The little broccolis it gets as it bolts are yummy to nibble on. Kale, bok choy, turnip bed freshly weeded and bok choy pulled. Cucumber plants will go in there in a couple days I think. Or maybe I should put them next bed over. Do you think they would climb sunchokes and like it? Peppers were uncovered and fertilized Thursday. Not growing super great here yet. This is the way other end of the pepper bed, eggplant, basil, tomatillos, ground cherries.

Potatoes were deep mulched with straw to 'hill up'. They are growing in black plastic. Amazing looking plants and no CPBs at all! Mixed baby lettuces going crazy and coral shell peas. The peas were just starting to fill out today. I ate a few and will pick Sunday. They are loaded! Then other crops will go in here with some horse manure I got Tuesday. Beets need to be thinned real bad! I will get my mom to do it and transplant some if the soil is wet as she goes along. I put the sun hat on the lettuces on Wednesday. Only Simpson had bolted yet; some are amazing. This is the cheapest weed blocker fabric. Thanks for looking.

My lettuce has had its two-week season; I'll gather seed for next year, though I'm not sure why I bother.
I envy your spuds, though not their pests.

Thanks. The weeds are getting bad in some sections. I think I will put in my next cucs where the one spinach/sunchoke bed is. They should be happy growing with the sunchokes. Worth a try anyway.

I think sunchokes, like other sunflowers, put out substances that discourage other plants. Not that you oughtn't give it a try, but maybe don't bet the farm.

I read in a book years ago to grow cucs up sunflowers and I used to try it. I don't think they did as well as with a trellis now that you mention it. I had planned on just pulling up the bolted spinach in the sunchoke area and mulching, but I greens are so popular I am trying to make room for more so I thought why not put the cucs in there. This is my second planting of cucs.

As long as the products are sufficient for your needs, why not?
Bolted spinach? That's all I got this year. Oh, well, seed for next year.

Here in the north I find spinach is always bolted by solstice, more likely the first week of June. Gone, gone, gone. Doesn't seem to matter when I plant it, so I plant it in September and overwinter it under plastic. That way it actually gets some leaves before it bolts.
If your cukes aren't too rampant they do well in tomato cages.

minnie, i had great luck with beans and cucs and millet, but corn might work, but i would think sunflowers and cucs would not do so well (though have not tried it).

My goal every year is to not run out of seed before next year. Unfortunately I ran out of chard and kale today. I planned on doing more Summer Greens later on. I want to advertise them as Tamara's Nutrition Mix but my husband thinks that sounds bad. (pictured above). Now I have to think of what else I might need to order; rubber bands that are thicker than the ones I bought, flower sleeves for head lettuce?
