Last load of onions (Redwing) and my drying shelves. I just fixed the tarp and have a lot of onions under there! Yes my garden shed is an ice fish house.

I've got a question about rhubarb and weeds. There is a line of rhubarb in the 'lawn' where I rent and they always let me harvest it. It does pretty good but has been getting skinner. Then it gets real weedy. I water it some over the summer and have also composted it before. So right now it is a mess of milkweed and other weeds. Do you think if I torched everything real good, put down manure or compost and then mulched with wood chips the rhubarb would come back well next year? I know people say they can never kill it so I figure it is worth asking about.

Sounds like the crowns are just getting old and their soil depleted. If it's not more work than you want, I'd dig up some crowns, then torch, dig in plenty of amendments, and separate and replant the crowns; should come roaring back.

I know people say they can never kill it so I figure it is worth asking about. Rhubarb needs water, and it likes fertilizer, especially the old ones. Wood chips will do nothing except maybe keep the ground slightly moist. Put rotted manure around it or cocoa bean hulls, which besides acting as a moisture retainer have fertilizer value. Most important keep them wet.

Maybe you didn't catch that I said I would manure and then mulch with wood chips to prevent the weeds. They are engulfed with weeds. Well maybe the best thing is wait to early spring and manure and mulch then. I monkeyed with them a couple years ago and moved some in that I found elsewhere. They get watered since they are right next to the pump and spigots.

I bought some garlic at a market here in Vancouver and I was wondering if I could get suggestions on bringing it home.

We went to Butchart Gardens in Victoria yesterday. We saw 5 inch long slugs on our hikes the day before! And you can see them on the road like snakes.

Banana slugs; I think the Banana slug is the mascot of UC Santa Cruz.

Well the person picking my garden while I was gone did not overinflate the hail damage report she gave me. There is lots of hail damage in my garden (none at home). Even the scallions and leeks are all shattered. The greens were hit hard and lots of big tomatoes and every single sunflower needs to be picked up and thrown out. Looks like I have a lot to do tomorrow. I had planned on digging sweet potatoes Wednesday. Tons of things need pulling out and cover crops need to be seeded. At least it didn't frost around here on Monday!

Well a fitting end to an extra good summer season I guess. Can't have anything too nice you know! I threw out the toppled sunflowers today. I felt like Taps should be playing. It looked like a warzone and carrying these 8 foot long, 80 pound things made me feel like burying soldiers. The sad part is that it wasn't just the summer crops that were damaged but the chard, kale and new fall greens too! Except Mizuna. That is the single greatest crop of all time! Why did I never grow it before?! Seriously it is wonderful.

The apple tree is super blemished this year. I found lady bugs eating the fruits.
