We grow 16 varieties of common beans (pole, bush, dry, snap) and 1 runner bean. This year 3 of those varieties came from Seed Savers Exchange, 1 from Fedco, and the rest were from our stock. One of the varieties from SSE, Gold of Bacau, appears to have anthracnose. None of the other varieties are affected, even those that are sharing the trellis with the diseased variety. I had to look this up to ID and it said that it can come in on infected seed, so I called SSE to let them know. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this disease? Does anyone else grow Gold of Bacau? If so, is it disease prone? I pulled out the infected plants and put them in the garbage.

Update to the first post - this morning I noticed that another variety from SSE, Speckled Cranberry, is also infected. Both of the varieties from SSE were planted on trellises that are shared with varieties from our homegrown seed. The infection stops where the variety changes. I'm going to be checking all the plantings on a daily basis to see if more of this shows up, especially in the 3rd variety we got from SSE.

Walk, One of the farm advisers who was here, told me if I ever saw that disease, to pull the infected plant right away. Fungal spores are easily carried to healthy plants in wind-blown rain and by people and machinery moving through contaminated fields when the plants are wet.
My condolences.

Just an update - after notifying SSE about the 2 varieties that were diseased, I was told that the seed stock came from a supplier they no longer deal with, and that the seed lots were 3 to 4 years old. They said they would test the seed and let me know. Got an e-mail a couple of days ago saying that they tested negative for anthracnose. If not diseased, I feel that there is at least a quality issue as no other bean variety was affected. I asked if it was possible to get replacement seed from a fresher batch so I could trial these next year and that request was not responded to. As a lifetime member of the SSE, I would have to say that I'm quite disappointed in the seed quality and lack of an offer to make good on this problem. I've been feeling that the seed packets have been on the skimpy side and this is not the first time I've run into poor quality with seeds from the commercial operation (and don't even get me started on the stuff that is circulating in the exchange).
