It grows like a weed in my garden. It does not need lots of water like the traditional growing technique in Japan. My wasabi plants bolted and set some seed pods which when dry explodes all over the place, I now have hundreds of seedlings germinating in the middle of winter here in NZ. It is a perennial and continues to grow after flowering.

A friend has it growing in a pot. It's very attractive to the usual brassica pests but is otherwise robust. He hasn't tried harvesting any yet.

Does it produced sizeable roots though? I grew it for years here in Norway, but the roots remained small..

The part that is used in Wasabi is the stem (remove the leaves) not the roots. The reason they are grown in running water is to soften the pungency by increasing the girth of the stem. I tried some grated stem of my plants (two inches thick) and they packed a punch.

Wondering if anyone has seeds to trade? I want to try it as an indoor plant since the roots cost $130 per pound at a Japanese store which they were selling amounts like 0.02 of a pound
